Exhale in South Africa
Each corner of the world shyly touts its unique mystery; humble offerings to provide the traveler with not just new sights and experiences, but fresh feelings and awakenings. The allure within Africa we find undeniable is a powerful draw to reconnect with the Earth, and in this, a paradoxical harmony of feeling grounded and rooted, yet lifted. It is a place where primitive reality connects to poetic ethereality. Our ideal itinerary, a balance of raw nature and lush luxury, unfolds below.

CAPE TOWN
Those who refer to America as a melting pot have likely never passed through Cape Town, which is a flurry of unexpected cultural congruencies. They seamlessly unite as they weave a common thread of this vibrant, creative energy unlike anywhere else. A bespoke itinerary will cut through an otherwise overwhelming volume of prospective experiences.
PROPERTIES
ELLERMAN HOUSE
Cape Town boasts the title of Africa’s art capital, and one of the defining features of the Ellerman House property is the owner’s extensive art collection, containing original works both contemporary and from the turn of the last century. The property itself is a work of art in its own right, presenting an opportunity to interact with the unique Cape Edwardian architecture style, overlooking uninterrupted views of the upscale Bantry Bay neighborhood and Clifton beaches.
Reside in one of the 13 individually decorated rooms and suites, while enjoying the hotel’s shaded verandas, terraced indigenous gardens, and private infinity pools. Delivering exceptional hospitality is the team’s utmost priority, displayed among other ways via the daily menu of modern classics, paired with private tastings from the resident sommelier who accesses the property’s 7,500 bottle wine cellar.
Ellerman House embodies the mindful purpose of the conscious hotel movement in a unique way: through their Click Foundation. The Harris family, property owners, has created this foundation to assist with educational development for underprivileged South African youth. A stay here aids in forging a brighter future within the education system.
THE SILO
The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront neighborhood of Cape Town is the oldest working harbor in the Southern Hemisphere, dramatically backdropped by sweeping views of Table Mountain. The V&A waterfront is home to Cape Town’s most exclusive luxury hotel: The Silo. Uniquely designed into the grain elevator of the grain silo complex, yet seated above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, the property is a delightful blend of historic importance and stylish contemporary glamour.
Heatherwick Studio is responsible for the exterior design. Maintaining the integrity of the original structure, the team added ingenious glass windows inserted into the geometry of the hotel floors. These mutli-faceted structures glisten by day and glow by night as an iconic beacon along this distinctive skyline.
As The Silo is part of The Royal Portfolio you can guarantee a genuine warmness will permeate the services provided. Prioritizing a family ethos to promote belonging and comfort in the midst of your stay is at the heart of this family owned portfolio.
TOURS
CAPE PENINSULAR
Tour the Atlantic seaboard coastal road with a private driver on the Cape Peninsular excursion, winding by the pristine beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay, passing through Chapman’s Peak into the coastal towns that await below. Simonstown and Kalk bay offer a glimpse into fisherman’s villages. Beyond awaits the sheltered granite inlets of Boulders Beach, home to the rare African penguins, part of the Cape Nature Conservation. Interact with wildlife again at the Cape Point Ostrich Farm. A lunch stop at Noordhoek’s trendy Foodbarn is a welcome reprieve before continuing on past Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay and Muizenberg. Overall, a day that delights in a variety of spirited sights.
CAPE TOWN CITY & TABLE MOUNTAIN TOUR
Explore the collision of nature, art, design, history, food and wine that characterize Cape Town’s vibrant cultural scene all in one day with the Cape Town City & Table Mountain Tour. Begin by soaking in breathtaking views from a cable car ride up Table Mountain. Marvel at the sights from the top with a brief stroll along the ridge. Tour the Castle of Good Hope, a slice of history revered as the best preserved Dutch East India Company fort. Pause for lunch at Beau Constantia before continuing on through the Greenmarket Square flea market and V&A Waterfront.
THE WINELANDS
Wind your way an hour east of Cape Town to valleys of vines silhouetted by a backdrop of mountains and you are in South Africa’s Winelands region: a trio of three primary towns — Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl. Among some of the first European settlements, a Dutch influence is still apparent, though Franschhoek is known as the ‘French corner’ (and also as the food and wine capital of South Africa). Between the Mediterranean climate, the merit of the soil and the hilly terrain it is one of the world’s most premium sites for modern viticulture, though its agricultural history dates all the way back to the late 1600s.
PROPERTIES
DELAIRE GRAFF ESTATE
A choice recommendation is the Delaire Graff Estate, known as the jewel of the Cape Winelands. Between the world class spa, gourmet culinary delights and award winning wines, no luxurious amenity is spared in this perfectly idyllic setting. Complete relaxation is the priority of the estate, as is apparent in the attention to detail within the carefully conceived lodges. Generously spacious living areas are well lit, flowing into private plunge pools where the lodge butler is only happy to oblige guests with a chilled glass of wine.
THE SAFARI EXPERIENCE
As our idealized itinerary of South Africa continues, we now reach a turning point in a shift away from the vibrant city culture of Cape Town and the Winelands in favor of a retreat deeper into our connection with nature. In this shift we discover a swap from the manicured estates to innovative eco-lodges that find themselves blending in with the raw natural environment. No excursion to Africa is complete without a dedication to finding onself in the presence of the imfamous big five game: the lion, the elusive leopard, the rhinocerous, the elephant and dangerous Cape buffalo. A special handful of properties allow this objective to unfold with greater ease.
PROPERTIES
SABI SABI EARTH LODGE
The nomenclature of the Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge implies exactly what you will discover on site: that everything within the property is inspired by nature, thoughtfully designed around touches such as impala horn shapes for table legs, water lily leaf shapes for table designs, and tree branches for countertops. The aim is to invite a sense of calm and restorative spirit into its visitors as their world and the natural world blend together in perfect harmony.
Despite traditional bush lodge style and an emphasis on nature, Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge maintains a distinctly futuristic and elegant style, easily apparent in the design of the 13 luxurious suites. Each contains its own private pool, butler, en-suite glass fronted bathroom, outdoor shower and custom furnishings. Overlooking a waterhole and vast span of bush, visitors will not have to wait long for a glimpse of African wildlife, particularly considering the twice daily open vehicle safaris. Between these exciting tours, take advantage of the lodge’s library, underground wine cellar, Zen garden and Amani Spa.
SINGITA LEBOMBO LODGE
Tucked away in the northeastern-most corner of the country awaits the Kruger National Park, an enormous game reserve — one of Africa’s largest. Protection for this sacred land began in 1898, and in 1926 it was awarded the title of South Africa’s first national park. Natural geographic barriers serve as the boundaries of the park, which is bordered by the Limpopo and Crocodile rivers to the north and south respectively, and the Lebombo Mountains at the east. Within awaits some of the most rare sightings of flora and fauna that you can find at any African game reserve.
Singita Lebombo Lodge defers to the natural landscape within which it finds itself, evidenced in the construction which is almost entirely wood and glass. The result is an experience of feeling oneness with the African bush to the greatest extent possible, yet without sacrificing modern amenities and comfort to be revelled in between the daily game drives through Kruger National Park.
SABI SANDS GAME RESERVE
Adjacent to the Kruger National Park awaits the Sabi Sands game reserve, privately owned by dedicated custodians of this precious wilderness who aim to protect the wildlife populations for future generations. Conscious of the footprint on the Sabi Sands, owner Japie van Niekerk has developed clean energy solutions for both the hospitality and safari elements of the Cheetah Plains experience. Solar renewable energy, grey-water recycling and a dedication to local employment are some of the tangible outpourings of this holistic approach to sustainability.
The lodge itself consists of three designer homes, allowing between four to eight guests each. Every bush home has its own outdoor boma area, two lounges, a wine cellar and heated swimming pool.
Participate in the twice daily game drives aboard the zero-emission Land Cruiser Electric safari vehicles, exploring the bush at its busiest times: early morning and late afternoon. Tours include sunrise and sunset stops and stargazing. Further opportunity to sharpen yourself to a deeper appreciation of nature and our own place within its ecosystem comes with the guided bush walks also offered at Cheetah Plains.
ROYAL MALEWANE
Condé Nast Traveler accolades should never go underestimated, which is why we note that Royal Malewane achieved mention on the Top 20 Resorts in the World list, keeping company with The Silo as another gem in The Royal Portfolio’s collection. Part of the Thornybush Private Game Reserve at Kruger National Park’s Western border, the lodge is made easily accessible due to the private landing strip on site.
Royal Malewane divides itself into two halves with The Farmstead being the more private counterpart. It consists of three luxury farm suites, each with a spacious bedroom and en-suite bathroom. The Farmhouse suite itself has its own chef, housekeeper, butler, private safari vehicle complete with a ranger and tracker. Meals are considered celebrations, crafted to linger on one’s palette after the sun has gone down and the African stars have twinkled their way into view.
While this detailed itinerary has been carefully complied in conjunction with our trusted partners, as with any Paper & Diamond production, it can be entirely customized and adjusted based on each client’s individual preferences and priorities. A dazzling array of additional excursions could be considered in conjunction with South Africa, including but not limited to exploration of Zimbabwe and/or Madagascar. In partnership with our expert friends at Ker & Downey® Africa it is our honor to bring you an elite experience of the Motherland. To learn more, visit our Contact page to submit an inquiry.

It certainly seems as though these at-home eye treatments are the ‘it’ beauty product of the moment. Yet before jumping on the bandwagon, a sensible consideration would be to understand which products are most worthy of investment, based the various ingredients and benefits offered by each. Paper & Diamond has tested the market at hand with personal reviews of the top 5 under eye masks to try at home. Discover the perfect eye match for your primary concerns with our definitive list below.
CHANEL LE LIFT ANTI-WRINKLE FLASH EYE REVITALIZER
It is more than just the notorious Chanel branding that makes this under eye mask one of Paper & Diamond’s top recommendations. A unique combination of both a roll-on serum and hydrogel patch formula, we found that this eye care system addressed all of our needs simultaneously: reduction in puffiness, fading of fine lines, fatigue symptoms diminished, dark circles lightened and an overall improvement to tone and firmness. This is likely due to the potent Edulis Morning Glory extract the product is hailed for. As one would expect from Chanel, this item constitutes our most splurge-worthy budget of all items on the list.
KNESKO SKIN ROSE QUARTZ ANTIOXIDANT COLLAGEN EYE MASKS
For those of us city dwellers who are constantly faced with an environment rife with concerns such as free-radicals caused by smog, pollution and pesticides, the Knesko Rose Quartz mask presents the perfect solution, as it is formulated specifically with these concerns in mind. Rose quartz, a crystal that speaks to the Heart Chakra, is an active ingredient of this product. Its soothing and calming properties will not only impact the under-eye area, but can be absorbed more deeply into the soul, offering a sense of calmness and clear-headed focus. Therefore, we recommend this product as the best under eye mask for a true at-home spa experience.
SKYN ICELAND HYDRO COOL FIRMING EYE GELS
Paper & Diamond are major proponents of Skyn Iceland for their thoughtful products derived from Icelandic glacial water and minerals, free from chemicals, parabens, silicone, fragrance and dye. These vegan under-eye gel patches will transform stressed skin with their 6 essential minerals and a unique technology known as hexapeptide, which goes deep below the surface to calm the muscles beneath the skin. Despite being our most cost conscious product on this list, the product is a celeb cult-fav, highlighted on the Today Show, the Doctors and Rachael Ray among other accolades.
SHISEIDO WRINKLE RESIST 24 PURE RETINOL EXPRESS SMOOTHING EYE MASK
Shiseido likens its Retinol under eye mask to the phenomenon of steaming a wrinkled garment, an image that alone sold us. In seeking the best eye mask for wrinkles, we found this product to shine above the rest. Their proprietary Pure Retinol Micro-Infusion Technology offers immediate relief in terms of anti-wrinkle properties, while botanical additives such as Chollera, Mukurossi and Gambir extracts address future prevention. The product is one of the Japanese pharmacy-turned-beauty brand’s top selling items, and has received a coveted Allure Best of Beauty Award.
JOANNA VARGAS BRIGHT EYE FIRMING MASK
We found that Joanna Vargas’ contribution to our list of the top five under eye masks for at-home use made the list due to their ability to provide an instant lift without any surgical means necessary. Soothing chamomile meets hydrating hyaluronic acid along with luxurious hydrolized silk protein for a very well researched product that offers deep moisture and youthful restoration.
Whether your concerns are an overall under eye refresh, environmental pollutions, a cost effective eye mask, eye masks to reduce wrinkles, or a full lift experience with your eye mask, Paper & Diamond points the way. Have you experimented with any of the above under eye masks? Or do you have a product you prefer to address your under eye aging concerns? Leave us a comment below.
The Four Best Sources of Aquatic Nutrition
Given the Earth’s surface is 71% water, it should be no surprise that we can turn to this liquidity for unique sources of nourishment and dietary accompaniments. Below is just a small selection of our favorite vegan nutritional contributions sourced straight from the sea.
When we think of farming and plant based sources of nutrition, we no doubt primarily conjure land based crops and agricultural practices in our mind. However, given the Earth’s surface is 71% water, it should be no surprise that we can turn to this liquidity for unique sources of nourishment and dietary accompaniments. Below is just a small selection of our favorite vegan nutritional contributions sourced straight from the sea.
Sea Moss
Sea moss, also known as Irish moss or red algae, is more common to Caribbean and Irish diets than what we may be accustomed to in the United States. These cultures have long used the dietary supplement for its healing properties. It is little wonder, as the plant contains 92 of the 102 minerals needed by the body, included but not limited to B-Vitamins, amino acids, Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc. How does one consume sea moss, you may wonder? Try soaking the plant in water overnight, draining, then blending. A gelatinous substance is the result, great for adding to smoothies and juices as a thickening agent. Virtually tasteless, you will hardly notice its presence on your palette. However, you will no doubt reap the benefits, highlights of which include immune support, metal detoxification, mitigating symptoms of anxiety and depression and improvement to gut health.
Seaweed
In many cultures and cuisines, seaweed has long been a common contender for nutrition. It is only as of late that it has experienced a more widespread adoption not just on the menus of trendy fine dining establishments or cocooning your favorite sushi roll, but with its own dedicated section in grocery store aisles. Health enthusiasts seeking snackable items gravitate towards such products for their widespread merit. Low in calories yet high in nutrient content, and with a salty and crunchy appeal, seaweed snacks seem to be the new kale chips, offering clean, plant-based protein as well as important minerals. The snack also runs the alphabetic gamut of vitamins, providing a source for A, B, C, E and K. We are partial to Sakara’s Original Nori Chips.
Water Lentils
Water lentils are remarkable in their ability to double in crop size in just a day, making them an extremely sustainable source of nutrition. They are known as the world’s smallest flowering plant, grown upon the surface of fresh water. Often found in a powder form, water lentils can be incorporated into smoothies, energy shots, tea, snack bars or anywhere you may incorporate a type of protein powder or similar supplement. Or, eaten in a fresh form, they garner salads, stir fries and curries with a mild watercress taste. Water lentils contain all of the essential amino acids, as well as double the protein and iron of your typical lentil. Further, they are a great source of the elusive B12 and have high values of fiber and lutein. It is predicted water lentils will soon begin replacing ingredients such as soy in veggie burgers.
BLUE MAJIK
A scroll through the Instagram feed or recipe archive of any vegan chef will likely at some point have you stumbling upon an aesthetically pleasing smoothie bowl featuring a beautiful milky blue color. The culprit here is a derivative of spirulina, a freshwater algae, with photosynthetic compounds that provide the colorant used to create beautiful smoothies and smoothie bowls, or perhaps a vegan ice cream, latte or other inspired item. The powder is hailed for its abilities to protect and support joint health, provide high amounts of iron and potassium, and is overall an immune-boosting superfood. It is recommended to be mixed with strong fruit flavors to mask the aquatic taste, but this can be relatively easily disguised. Don’t miss our resident Vegan Chef Extraordinaire Morgan’s Blue Nice Cream recipe.

Child’s Pose
Sit on the floor with your knees wide and your toes touching. Lower your belly between your thighs and rest your forehead to the floor. Extend your arms, facing your palms down and lengthen from your hips through your fingertips. Breathe gently in this pose anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes.
Pigeon
Starting in downward facing dog, bring your right knee forward and place it in line with your right hand. Your shin should be parallel with the front of your mat. Extend your left leg back and rest your knee and top of foot on the ground. Square your hips and fold forward resting your forehead on your hands. Hold for 2- 5 mins on each side.
Cow Face Pose
Stack your right knee on top of the left. Inhale, extend the arms out at your sides and cross one elbow on top of the other. Hold for 2 minutes. Repeat on the opposite side.
Plow
Lay down flat on the ground with arms extended parallel to your sides. Keep palms pressed against ground. Then slowly lift your legs and torso upwards using the support of your shoulders, back and arms. Your toes should ultimately lie just above your head.
Fish Pose
Start by lying on your back. Pull your elbows and forearms along the ground and lift up until your chest is arched and the middle of your head is on the floor.
Reclined Goddess Pose
Lie down on the ground and bring the soles of your feet together. Turn your palms up to the sky and release your shoulders. Breathe into this luscious restorative pose for up to 30 minutes.
After you complete the sequence, take a moment to notice how you feel. Have you released tension and anxiety? Do you feel more calm and clear? It is my hope that this sequence, or even a pose or two, can help you feel calm and collected when life gets chaotic.
A Definitive Guide to The Top Nutritional Seeds
Society is rife with constant dietary suggestions from varying sources. Whether the source at hand is in support of a Mediterranean, plant-based, vegan, Ayurvedic or other basis for optimum nutrition (there are endless), one key takeaway consistent across the board from each of these dietary plans is that incorporating a variety of seeds into your eating habits is an essential source of nutrients.
However, for those unfamiliar with exactly which seeds to seek for their own particular menu, it can be daunting to know where to begin. In partnership with our Paper & Diamond Vegan Chef Extraordinare, Morgan Witkin, we have your definitive guide of the top nutritional seeds to advise just which seeds you should add to your diet, with recipe suggests from Morgan on exactly how to do just that.

FLAX
As a vegetarian or vegan, it can be difficult to obtain omega-3 fats from food sources. Yet two of these essential fatty acids are not produced naturally by the body and must be consumed through food sources. Flax is rich in alpha-linolenic acid or ALA, one of these two. Additionally, flax seed provides a great source of fiber, B vitamins and Magnesium. Improvements to weight loss, cholesterol levels, and cancer prevention have all been researched in relation to a diet that incorporates regular consumption of flax seed.
In terms of incorporating flax into your diet, we love that it can be a binder in recipes that you may ordinarily expect an egg with. For example, Morgan’s Simple Blueberry Pancakes are guilt free, vegan, gluten free treat that make great use of flax.
CHIA
Similar to flax seed, chia seeds are another excellent resource in terms of omega-3 fatty acids, as well as acting as a vegan egg replacement. Chia seeds are also rife with a variety of other nutrients, including fiber, calcium, manganese, phosphorus, iron and potassium — in other words, these small seeds pack a large punch in terms of their available benefits. We love them for their ability to detox the digestive tract. Nearly flavorless, chia seeds are easy to incorporate into baked goods, breakfast foods, smoothies (our favorite) and more - though it is very important to incorporate the seeds into another food or liquid prior to consuming. For a healthy dessert, we recommend Morgan’s Chocolate Chia Pudding.
CARAWAY
Caraway seeds are one of the more aromatic and flavored seeds on our list, with nutty and sharp properties reminiscent of anise. This seed is a great addition to adding unique flavor to vegetables, curries, soups and stews. Toasting the seeds can release a more vibrant flavor, whereas for a less flavorful option you can always cook the dish with the seeds than remove prior to serving. For example, caraway seed can be bundled in a muslin wrapping and boiled in water with vegetables such as cauliflower or cabbage to help mitigate the odor of these vegetables. Caraway can also be taken in the form of a tea or supplement. A great non-dairy source of calcium, caraway seeds are also rich in fiber. They help reduce inflammation, promote weight loss, encourage healthy digestion and more.
HEMP
Not to be confused with the psychoactive TCH component of marijuana, hemp plants do share the same species as cannabis, just in a different variety. Hemp seeds are higher in protein than both flax and chia. Their ingestion has been linked to research relieving dry and itchy skin conditions including eczema. This is also a great seed to take into consideration during your menstrual cycle, as PMS symptoms have been relieved through the gamma-linolenic acid in hemp seeds. There is research being done as well into the plant’s ability to reduce menopause symptoms as well; overall it seems GLA aids in the regulation of hormonal imbalance. Morgan offers a great Classic ‘Nutty’ Green Smoothie Recipe that flawlessly integrates hemp seeds with a variety of other healthful ingredients for a smoothie that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is healthful.
POMEGRANATE
A favorite snack option of ours, pomegranate seeds are rife with antioxidants (more than green tea!) that help remove free radicals and protect skin cells from future damage, as well as reduce inflammation, provide vitamin C and prevent cancer. If you are a regular exerciser, pomegranate juice can speed up the recovery process of sore muscles and exercise induced oxidative damage. Pomegranate seeds are easy to ingest on their own but equally simple to add to a variety of salads, salad dressings and smoothies. We love how they decorate Morgan’s Energy Boosting Green Smoothie.
PUMPKIN SEEDS
You’ve likely seen them abundantly in Mexican cuisine as ‘pepitas’ (specifically these are the little green kernels within the shelled pumpkin seeds though pumpkin seeds can be eaten with or without the shell). They are one of the top sources of maganese, phosphorous, copper and magnesium. These little seeds offer an amino acid, tryptophan, that can help have a positive effect on sleep, anxiety, mood, appetite and pain. Eat them roasted plain, as an added crunch to your salad, experiment with their incorporation into a homemade granola, utilize in a homemade pesto, or create pumpkin seed butter and use as you may other nut butters.

They present an elusive common thread whose significance carries across all time periods and cultures.

Partnering with one of Nordic Luxury’s local experts allows for the benefit of exploring both the well-known must-sees, as well as discovering hidden gems and secret local destinations not readily advertised to tourists, for a fully immersive introduction of Reykjavik.
FRIDHEIMAR FARM
A sense of rootedness and connecting back with the Earth is a certain perk of a stop at Fridheimar farm, an Icelandic family run business and working farm. It is where a husband’s passion for horticulture and wife’s passion for raising horses combine, breeding both organic heirloom tomatoes and equine on the same beautiful property. Crops are sustainably grown in special greenhouses powered by geothermal heating from Iceland’s natural subterranean supply. The family operates a restaurant on-site as well, with tomatoes as the menu’s cornerstone, delighting the palette in everything from quintessential tomato soup to the more unexpected tomato schnapps.
BLACK SAND BEACHES
Iceland’s black sand beaches are an illustration of the beautiful creativity available on this Earth. Get up close and personal with a terrain like you’ve never seen before as part of an ATV safari tour of the southland’s Thorlakshofn, a key port city along the southern border. Diamond Beach is perhaps the most unique of the black sand beach options, given the glacier formation breakaways that have washed ashore to present a stunning icy contrast with the sand.
WATER
THE BLUE LAGOON
Of course one of Iceland’s most unmissable sights is the legendary Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa located in a lava field, supplied by geothermal power. The lagoon’s shades of milky blue result from the silica content, which also creates a white mud. Both the water and the mud are renowned for their healing powers. Year round the waters are found at 102° F. It is little wonder National Geographic has added it to their list of top 25 Wonders of the World.
LAKE HVITARVATN KAYAK TOUR
Take to the glassy smooth, glacial light blue waters of Lake Hvitarvatn by kayak. This beautiful lake is part of Iceland’s interior, up in the highlands. It is an outlet of the second largest glacier in Iceland, lending to the presence of small icebergs upon the lake’s surface.
ADDITIONAL BOATING TOURS
Perhaps you are interested in witnessing the beautiful song and dance of whales in nature. Iceland is Europe’s top whale watching destination, rife with ample opportunity to view humpback whales, minke whales, Northern bottlenose whales and blue whales in their natural habitat. Nordic Luxury also supports a private cruise via zodiac boat in the Jokulsarlon ice lagoon, as pictured above, where you’ll likely share the waters with seals as you navigate through the milky white and bright blue icebergs during sunrise or sunset.
AIR
PRIVATE HELICOPTER TOURS
Viewing the rolling landscapes and geographic variances across Iceland via the air is an experience allowed to only a lucky few. Imagine a full day helicopter expedition of the Southeast coast of Iceland, cruising over waterfalls, volcanos and glaciers as you learn all about the land of fire and ice. An incredibly special treat comes with a touchdown on Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier.
GLACIER SNOWMOBILING
Inhale some of the purest, icy air in the world while zipping across Langjokull glacier on a private snowmobiling trip. As pillowy clouds surround you, you will truly feel as though you are on top of the world (little wonder, the ice cap is actually situated nearly 4,800 above sea level). Langjokull is also home to stunning ice caves well worth an exploration of.
GULLFOSS WATERFALL
When you first come upon Gullfoss waterfall, it may appear as though this flowing white river disappears into thin air. However, as you approach closer you will see how in actuality, it plunges into a a deep crevice at a thunderous roar. Breathing in the glacial spray is rejuvenating, and on a sunny day this spray can form a rainbow bridge across the torrent.
FIRE
VOLCANIC ACTIVITY SITES
Iceland is host to a variety of volcanic activity, and the fiery effects of this geographic wonder create all kinds of interesting landmarks to interact with. There are the geothermal hot sulfuric mud springs of Namaskaro, where no vegetation grows due to the soil acidity. At times it looks practically otherworldly, as though you’ve just transported to an entirely different planet. Kerid volcanic crater lake is a 3,000 year old South Iceland landmark. The vivid aquamarine of the mineral water contrasts with the red volcanic rock juxtaposing the fire and ice concept Iceland is so well known for. Just a short stop away is the famous geyser, ‘Geysir,’ which hurls boiling water upwards of 225 feet into the air and has been active an impressive 10,000 years.
RAUFAROLSHELLIR LAVA TUNNEL
5,200 years ago, the Leitahraun volcanic eruption occurred, with lava cutting a path through the mountains to create cave formations in this area. During the winter, ice sculptures form in the cave entrance creating an impressive look at how powerful nature’s forces can be. Embark on a guided tour under the earth’s surface into a volcanic lava tunnel.
GEOTHERMIC BAKING
One sensorial pleasure not to be discounted during your Icelandic journey through the element of fire is the fruits of a geothermic baking labor. Laugarvatn Fontana is a geothermal spa allowing for this unexpected treat. Following relaxation in the steam baths and hot springs, indulge in a slice of bread baked buried in the ground.
AETHER
THE NORTHERN LIGHTS
Aether, the fifth element, can refer to a variety of different concepts, but typically has to do with unexplainable natural phenomena such as light and gravity. Aurora borealis, or the Northern lights, occur when atoms are energized by colliding with the atmosphere; this certainly fits the bill as one such inexplicable example of aether. The peak season for visibility in Iceland is September through March. Nordic Luxury’s guides are experienced in hunting the awe inspiring sight and advise on the best night to do so.
THE BLUE LAGOON RETREAT SPA
In some interpretations aether or quintessence was a heavenly quality that was thought to be a factor in alchemy, and promoting longevity through removal of impurities and illnesses. Naturally it follows that we classify an Icelandic spa experience removing the stressors and promoting heavenly feelings of relaxation as a way of connecting with the fifth element. The suite structures of the Retreat Spa at the Blue Lagoon are carved into the 800 year old lava flow and surrounded by mineral-rich glacial waters. Utter revjuvenation of mind, body and soul await in this underground realm of inspiring design and radiant wellness. Particular treatments include the three treasures of geothermal seawater: silica for radiance and cleansing, algae for anti-aging, and minerals for exfoliation and revitalization. It is the perfect destination to focus holistically on wellness.
Through the deeply rewarding experience of encountering the classic elements like never before in Iceland, you just may find the stage set for examining your own personal core truths. Iceland presents us with the opportunity to meditate upon what foundational pillars of our own lives we find to be the most vitalizing, rendering it one of those inexplicable trips where the journey remains with you, informing transformation long after you have departed the destination itself. Forward Vision: How to Map and Manifest Your Dream Life
Reneé possesses an expertise in stress management, retirement obstacles, confidence coaching, quarter- and mid-life support: or, to summarize, she is well-versed in navigating life’s gamut of transitions. In her vast experience assisting clients doing so, she has pioneered a personal approach as founder of “The Vision Map: Navigating a Future that Fascinates You.” The method is not only the answer to our asks, but it is the tool to arouse the deepest callings that we may be subconsciously preventing from rising to the surface.
It was Zora Neale Hurston who imparted the wisdom: “There are years that ask questions and years that answer.” While this of course varies on an individual basis dependent on our personal life paths, it also does not seem an overreach to collectively agree that 2020 will be categorized as one of the years slanted more towards an array of asks than apparent answers.
As we monitor the state of our globe in the current pandemic crisis, a common sentiment that keeps arising to the surface is uncertainty. We are equally unsure of the short term and long road, and the lack of clarity and control is comprehensive in how it carries across all realms of life: mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, economically. Yet so often if we reflect on the times where we have experienced profound awakenings and life enhancing shifts in our paths, is it not the effect of a somewhat drastic catalyst? What would it look like to take a more proactive approach to drawing answers out of a period of asking? Rather than focusing on the elements of the environment outside of our jurisdiction, what deeper purpose and inspiration can we tap into (and how)?
Enter Renee Welde. Renee is a cherished colleague of the Paper and Diamond team. Highly sought after as a holistic psychotherapist, her credentials hail from Villanova University and the Psychosynthesis Center for Spiritual Psychology. Renee possesses an expertise in stress management, retirement obstacles, confidence coaching, quarter- and mid-life support: or, to summarize, she is well-versed in navigating life’s gamut of transitions.
As Renee describes it,
The Vision Map method is a proven step by step process that takes a deep dive into unblocking your limited self- sabotaging beliefs and fears, so you can come into alignment with your unconscious, conscious and superconscious energy. You’ll discover a doable plan that brings more of your authentic Self into the world to create the results you want.
Part soul, part strategy, The Vision Map is a transformational experience that deeply understands that your personal and professional goals are the direct alignment with your mind, body, heart and soul.
Rooted in the latest brain and neuroscience research, a positive psychology model and intuitive listening and masterminding, we will address your next steps through body movement, guided meditations, written exercises, healing techniques and on the spot coaching.”
The guiding principle for the Vision Map is an acronymous take on itself:
V is for VIBRATION, raising the power of yours via passion projects and self-care practices.
I is for INTENTION, setting inspiring intentions that prioritize what provides the most meaning and purpose.
S is for SYNCHRONICITY, tapping into intuition of signs and signals that offer subtle communications to inspire your vision.
I is for IMAGINATION, unleashing the resourcefully creative potential within.
O is for OPENNESS, both in terms of mind and of heart.
N is for NOW, the combined result of all previous letters, as when you raise vibrations, set intentions, discern synchronicity, unleash imagination, open your mind and heart, you are ready for a new era of now, relinquishing past holds such as outdated habits, beliefs and the stories that may have been written about us with or without our permission.
As she coaches clients through this method, it helps bridge the gap that exists between the present reality they are seeking to change and the full potential of their dreams, those both realized and yet to be awakened. The journey of partaking in the various elements of the Vision Map unleashes answers, leading you to firmly understand your reason for being on this Earth. Renee guides her clients in discovering their unique gifts and talents, nurturing relationships that both serve them and allow them to be of service to others, and unleashing the creative fire and spirit within us. Her expertise can be sought in a variety of formats: digital retreats, group or individual sessions, as part of a destination wellness escape, guidance that spans various durations of time and more.
Renee’s capabilities are poised to suit the zeitgeist ushered in as a result in shifting patterns of thought due to the pandemic crisis, and alongside a trend that was already taking shape: conscious travel. Once travel is revived by the clearance of movement following this episode it is likely we may still hesitate before booking, wanting to ensure any risk in the act is mitigated by a mindful holiday that couples beautiful destinations and playful hobbies with something more profound. Travel is not just a departure in a geographic sense, but also presents the opportunity to escape from the daily habits and clutter that our routines sink us into, and in this, ushering in new patterns of behavior inspired by the expansion of our minds that results from seeing the world. Mapping and manifesting your dream life through the Vision Map method is the perfect activity to consider in a travel environment. Being heightened to the newness around you in a geographic sense will enhance your personal awakenings as well. Thus, as 2020 continues to unfold, you may find yourself not just asking what next destination the map of the world has in mind for you, but also meditating on your Vision Map for the answers you seek.
Should the idea of the Vision Map pique your intrigue, we invite you to stay tuned for upcoming opportunities to participate in a wellness retreat with spiritual guidance led by Renee Welde. Announcements will be made via our newsletter and social media so be sure to follow along at @paperanddiamond.
